Reporting to the shop foreman, the welder helper supports welders and metal fabricators by preparing materials, positioning workpieces, cleaning and finishing metal parts, and keeping the work area organized and safe. This is a hands-on, physically active entry-level role in a fabrication shop environment. No prior welding experience is required — on-the-job training is provided.
Tasks / Duties
Assist welders, structural steel and platework fitters, and other metal workers
Load, unload and transport raw materials and finished metal products manually or using hoists, cranes and other lifting devices
Clean and prepare metal surfaces prior to welding, including degreasing, wire brushing and removing rust and scale
Position, align and secure workpieces, fixtures and jigs for the welder
Remove excess welds, slag, spatter, rust and scale from metal parts, castings and finished products
Operate metal cleaning and finishing equipment such as grinders, deburrers, sanders and shotblasters
Sort, stack and organize metal sheets, parts, scrap metal and other materials
Check materials and finished parts against work orders for quantity, dimensions and obvious defects
Move welding cables, leads, gas cylinders and portable equipment to work locations
Assist with routine maintenance of welding and shop equipment, including changing consumables
Maintain a clean, organized and hazard-free work area; sweep, remove scrap and dispose of waste
Follow all health and safety procedures, wear required personal protective equipment and report hazards
Perform other general labouring duties as assigned
